About The Author

Doreen Rappaport has written many books for young readers, including an acclaimed trilogy about the African-American experience: NO MORE!, FREE AT LAST!, and NOBODY GONNA TURN ME ‘ROUND, all illustrated by Shane W. Evans. She is also the author of MARTIN’S BIG WORDS: THE LIFE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., illustrated by Bryan Collier. She lives in Copake Falls, New York.   Shane W. Evans has illustrated numerous books for children, including the Boston Globe–Horn Book award winner Shanna’s Ballerina Show. He attributes much of his influence to his travels to Africa, South America, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and much of the United States. He is a firm believer in education and creative development for all people. Underground is the recipient of the Coretta Scott King Medal for illustrations.
