Nelson is an American writer who was born in Chicago in 1951. After a stint in the Army, she moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and has been living there since 1975. She is the grand-niece of brothers Solomon and Lewis Michaux, who were influential figures in the black community during the early twentieth century.
Nelson’s writing career began in earnest in the early 1990s when she started contributing to The Crisis, a magazine founded by her uncle. She has since published more than a dozen books for young adults, both fiction and nonfiction.
